Alex Callaway

Original Art

Born in 1969, Alex Callaway grew up in rural Worcestershire, developing a deep affinity for nature from a young age.  In 1993 after achieving a distinction in HND Illustration at Falmouth School of Art, he developed his photo-realist style.  This led to him producing artwork for international poster companies Portal and Scandecor and major publishers such as Random House of Harper Collins.  At this time he was also busy undertaking murals and private fine art commissions.

In more recent years he has returned to his artistic roots, realising his passion for nature and the seasons, which in turn inspires him to produce original atmospheric paintings.

As an artist, I find myself increasingly drawn to the sublime nature of the Universe, aware of possibilities in which landscape painting can mirror our own internal spaces.  Thus transcending the boundaries imposed by our conditioning, just as the seasons turn and the weather transforms.

“The poetry of the painter is written with colour”

After much experimentation, I have found that working with a simplified palette of red, yellow, blue and white to be the most rewarding.  This is most effective for achieving my aims, to create a sense of naturalistic harmony with atmosphere. Colour is so important.  Every mark of the brush is, after all, an application of colour.  The marks made suggest form and texture, contributing to the eyes ability to ‘feel’ the mood or atmosphere of a painting.  All of these aspects are unified within the framework of composition.  I find this particularly so when Chiaroscuro (the play of light and shade) is given due consideration.
