Sue Brown

Original Art

After a foundation course at Falmouth School of Art in Cornwall, Sue took a degree in Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic, specialising in printmaking, and subsequently a PGCE and ATD at Bristol University, specialising in Art and Drama.

After a break of several years from printmaking she was inspired to resume the practice in 1996 after discovering the technique of collagraph printing being taught at the local Steiner School (Gloucester).  The process involves making a collage, sealing the surface with varnish then inking and printing the plate using an etching press.  The technique produces intaglio prints with deeply textural images.

Sue has recently extended her practice by working with ‘non toxic’ etching techniques developed by Keith Howard and Friedhard Kiekeban.  She is now etching copper plate safely in her studio and exploring the possibilities of combining etching and collagraph plates in the same image.  The images Sue uses are figurative; they are a vehicle for her to explore the qualities of etching and collagraph as printing techniques, and the opportunity to use hand made papers, metal leaf and collage in her work.

Due to the method of hand finishing employed, each print of an edition may vary slightly; this makes each work unique.
